Something New At The Merchandise Mart

Yesterday, while shopping at the Mart, I came across this magnificent structure in the lobby.  Buckminster Fuller's Fly's - Eye Dome is an original fiberglass and hardware structure that was created in 1977.  Fuller an architect, inventor, author and futurist conceived the dome as a prototype for new affordable prefab housing.  The dome is created from 50 fiberglass sections and weighs in at 3500 lbs.  This prototype was fabricated in California and is the only 24' dome that Fuller produced.
The piece on display until late June was erected to promote Art Chicago 2009.  This event is an annual international fair of contemporary and modern art that brings together the world's leading emerging and established galleries. Held on the 12th floor of the Mart from May 1-4 this is a must for all lovers of art and design. Held concurrently on the 8th floor of the Mart is the International Antiques Fair.  Truly something for everyone at one place that weekend!
Vitra, a global leader in the design and manufacturing of contemporary home and commercial furnishings,  will be providing all pieces and designing the interior of the dome.  The dome is courtesy of New York's Max Protetch Gallery and will remain on site until the end of June.
